If i want a certain lighting effect just select a specific color then fade it from dark to light. It doesn't matter now if the character or the background should be first thing to do.įor shading and lighting i use both markers and pencils matching their color. Just fill it with colors however you like, from markers or pencils. Simple semi-colored artwork without shading or lighting. Obviously the eraser won't erase the permanent black marker. The first phase of outlining is finished, now i get rid of the sketch made from scratch and i can add also extra outline details to fill the white blank paper and cover the "spiky" shaped lines of the outline. anything which fits with the element than black cause otherwise it won't look good. their outlines should rather be specific colors such as orange, blue, etc. However in some cases, where there are special effects like fire, water etc. Always the character first, then background comes in second. With the black marker i did the outline while the sketch itself remains intact for now. Over the spiky sketch now i can choose its actual shape of the character. Depending on what kind of background i choose, i can delete or redraw certain lines to my liking. I actually start the character's pose from face to body clothing first, then remaking the background sketch. While the "skeleton" of the artwork is done, time to fill it with its details. Just circles and sticks of the actual character pose then do the same thing with the background. Hopefully this tutorial will demonstrate how do i draw stuff in general, not just Saruman (which i took it as an example along with its background) and of course i'll explain it down below each step used:
